Buchi Emecheta OBE, a Nigerian born female novelist moved to the United Kingdom with her husband, Sylvester Onwordi, in the 1960s. She worked as a library officer in the British Museum, a youth worker and a community worker and wrote in her spare time. Her themes of child slavery, motherhood, female independence and freedom through education, won her significant critical acclaim and honours which enabled her to travel widely as a visiting professor and lecturer. Her best known works are: Bride Price, Second Class Citizen and The Joys of Motherhood. She died on 25th January 2017.
